| 内容記述 | This study investigates how native speakers of Japanese and English evaluate the acceptability of novel noun–noun compounds (NNCs) expressing shape, color, or material relations. Both languages are classified as Generalized Modification (GM)-positive, meaning they allow productive compounding. Adopting a psycholinguistic perspective, an online survey asked Japanese and English speakers to rate novel NNCs across three relation types. Results showed that shape-based compounds were broadly accepted across both groups, color-based compounds were largely rejected, and material-based compounds displayed significant cross-linguistic differences: English speakers were generally more accepting, while Japanese speakers were more conservative. The study highlights the importance of integrating cross-linguistic pragmatics into theoretical models of compounding. |
